Panama
A narrow strip of land binds two oceans, and the jungle presses in from both sides. Ships pass through a series of locks while herons watch from the mangrove edge, and the country itself seems to exist in the space between arrivals and departures.
A narrow strip of land binds two oceans, and the jungle presses in from both sides. Ships pass through a series of locks while herons watch from the mangrove edge, and the country itself seems to exist in the space between arrivals and departures.
Panama changes as you move through it. The capital sits on the Pacific, a city of glass towers and old wooden buildings where the air smells of salt and diesel and cooking plantains. Westward, the land rises into highlands where coffee grows in the shade of taller trees, and the temperature drops enough that you notice it. The towns here—Boquete, Volcán—have the feel of places where people came to stay rather than pass through. Further west still, the Darién region remains largely roadless, a vast green space where the jungle has not been cleared and the border with Colombia is a line on a map rather than a fence. To the east, the San Blas archipelago belongs to the Guna people, who have their own government and their own way of doing things. The islands are low and densely planted with coconut palms, and the water between them is shallow and clear. North of the capital, the Caribbean coast is different again—wetter, wilder, with Colón at its centre, a port city that feels like it belongs to the sea more than to any nation.
A day in Panama City begins early. The streets fill with people moving between the old quarter and the new one, between the canal zone and everywhere else. You walk through Casco Viejo, where the buildings are painted in faded colours and the streets are narrow enough that you can touch both walls. By mid-morning the heat is solid. You find a café where they serve thick black coffee and eat a pastry filled with cheese. The afternoon is spent moving slowly—perhaps taking a boat to see the canal locks from the water, watching the enormous ships rise and fall in the chambers, or walking in the rainforest where the canopy is so thick that noon feels like dusk. In the evening, the city cools slightly. People gather in parks and plazas. The light changes to gold and then to darkness very quickly. In the highlands, the rhythm is slower. You walk between coffee farms and cloud forest. The air is thin enough to notice. At night, the temperature drops and you sleep under a blanket. On the islands, time moves according to the tides and the weather. You swim in water so clear you can see the sand ten metres down. You eat fish that was caught that morning. The days have a simplicity that feels deliberate.
The reason to stay is the sense of being at a crossing point—not just geographically, but culturally and ecologically. The country contains multitudes within a small space. You can be in the jungle and see no one, or in the city and feel the weight of global commerce. You can travel between these worlds in hours. The Caribbean coast and the Pacific coast are not the same place. The mountains are not the lowlands. The indigenous territories are not the mestizo towns. Panama does not resolve these differences into a single image. It holds them all at once, and that complexity is what draws you back.
