St. Vincent & Grenadines
A volcanic spine runs through these islands, and the trade winds carry the smell of nutmeg and cocoa down from the ridges to the sea. St. Vincent rises sharp and green from the water, its crater still steaming. The Grenadines scatter south like stones thrown across the channel.
A volcanic spine runs through these islands, and the trade winds carry the smell of nutmeg and cocoa down from the ridges to the sea. St. Vincent rises sharp and green from the water, its crater still steaming. The Grenadines scatter south like stones thrown across the channel.
The northern islands have a different temperament from the southern ones. St. Vincent itself is steep and serious, its interior a tangle of rainforest where rivers cut through volcanic rock, and the towns cling to the coast because the land behind them is too wild to settle easily. Kingstown sits on the leeward side, a working port where fishing boats unload their catch and the streets smell of salt and diesel and the fruit markets that open before dawn. Move south and the islands flatten and dry out. Bequia has a different rhythm—the beaches are wider, the land gentler, the pace slower. The Grenadines proper begin to feel like an archipelago you could sail between in a morning. Mustique is private and manicured. Union Island sits at the southern edge, where the reef begins and the water turns colours that have no names in the temperate world.
A day on St. Vincent means walking through air that is never still. The wind moves constantly through the valleys, and the light changes every few minutes as clouds cross the volcanic peaks. The interior roads climb steeply, and from them you see the whole island at once—the dark green of the windward coast, the paler leeward side, the sea in every direction. Kingstown in the morning is loud and purposeful: vendors arranging fruit, the ferry preparing to leave for the islands, the smell of bread from the bakeries. By afternoon the heat drives people indoors, and the streets empty except for the dogs sleeping in doorways. On the smaller islands, the days are quieter. You walk on sand that is black or white depending on which island you are on, and the only sound is the wind in the palms and the water moving against the shore. The restaurants are simple—fish that was swimming that morning, rice, plantain, a beer that has been cold since before dawn.
The wish to stay comes from the fact that the islands have not been simplified for visitors. The people who live here work in fishing and farming and tourism, and these things exist together, not separately. You can sit in a restaurant where locals are eating lunch, or walk into a market where no one is performing hospitality. The beaches are not manicured into submission. The sea is rough on the windward side and calm on the leeward side, and both are real. The volcanic peaks are still volcanic—Soufrière on St. Vincent is not a monument but an active mountain, and you can smell the sulphur if you climb high enough. The islands have kept something of themselves, and that is what draws you back.
