Türkiye
A fisherman casts into the Aegean at dawn, his boat cutting through water the colour of lapis. Behind him, limestone cliffs rise pale against the sky, their caves still holding the dark of night.

Türkiye tilts from the Black Sea's green depths in the north to the Mediterranean's blue in the south, and the country changes shape as you move through it. The northern coast holds forests that run down to the water's edge, towns built on hillsides where the smell of hazelnuts dries in the air. Move inland and the landscape opens into plateaus, vast and spare, where villages cluster around stone fountains and the light falls hard and clear. The western coast—the Aegean side—is different again: drier, more fractured, with ancient ruins scattered across scrubland and the water dotted with islands that seem to float between worlds. The south, the Mediterranean coast, grows warmer and more theatrical, with mountains that drop straight into the sea and valleys where citrus trees grow thick beneath the sun. Istanbul sits at the country's hinge, where Europe and Asia meet across a strait, and it feels like a city that has never stopped moving, never stopped becoming something else.
A day in Ankara begins in the old quarter, where the streets climb steeply and the light changes as you turn each corner. The smell of bread comes from bakeries that have occupied the same doorways for decades. In the afternoon, the city spreads out into wider avenues and government buildings, then into the modern sprawl beyond. On the Aegean coast, a day moves differently: you might walk through Izmir's waterfront as the sun rises, then drive inland to Ephesus where the marble of an ancient library still catches the light, then find yourself in a village where the evening meal is laid out on a table under vines. In the south, around Antalya, the days are longer and slower, the heat pressing down, the sea always visible or audible. In the interior, around Cappadocia, the landscape is so strange—all those rock formations carved by wind and water—that time seems to work differently there too.
The wish to stay in Türkiye comes from the fact that it refuses to be simple. You can spend weeks on the coast and never reach the end of it, watching the water change colour as you move from one bay to the next. You can climb into the interior and find yourself in a landscape that feels untouched, where shepherds still move their flocks across the same paths their grandparents used. You can sit in a city café and watch the world pass, or walk through ruins and feel the weight of centuries. The country holds all of these things at once, and they do not resolve into a single impression. That is what draws people back—not a postcard image, but the sense that there is always more to discover, always another direction to turn.
