Seychelles
A woman walks barefoot through sand the colour of crushed pearls, a basket of cinnamon bark balanced on her head. Behind her, granite boulders the size of houses lean against the Indian Ocean as if they have always been there, worn smooth by centuries of wind and salt.

The Seychelles changes entirely depending on where the sea has deposited you. Mahé, the largest island, rises steeply from the water with a spine of green mountains that trap clouds and release them as mist. The capital, Victoria, sits on the eastern shore—a town of colonial buildings painted in faded yellows and blues, where the market smells of vanilla and cloves, and the streets are narrow enough that you hear conversations from both sides. Move west across Mahé and the landscape opens into plantations of coconut palms and cinnamon trees, their leaves releasing spice into the humid air. The southern coast is wilder, with fishing villages where men repair nets on the beach and the waves arrive with real force. Praslin, the second island, has a gentler character altogether—smaller, quieter, with beaches that curve like crescents and forests where the coco de mer palm grows nowhere else on earth. The northern islands are flatter, drier, more sparse. Farther out, the coral atolls barely rise above the waterline, their lagoons so clear you can see the sand beneath from the air.
A day here moves with the rhythm of tides and light. In Victoria, the morning is for walking—through the botanical gardens where giant tortoises graze, past the spice markets, along streets where the smell of fresh bread drifts from bakeries. By mid-morning the heat becomes serious, and people retreat indoors or to the water. The beaches are never crowded in the way beaches elsewhere are crowded; the islands simply do not have the weight of numbers. You swim in water so warm it barely registers as different from air. Afternoons blur into a kind of stillness—the sun directly overhead, the world simplified to light and shadow. Evenings arrive suddenly, the sky turning orange and then deep red within minutes. Restaurants and small cafés fill with locals and visitors sitting at the same tables, eating fish caught that morning, drinking beer that has been chilled in ice. The talk is unhurried. The night comes completely dark, the stars emerging in quantities most people have never seen.
The islands hold you because they do not perform. There is no sense of being displayed to, no infrastructure built to convince you of your own happiness. The granite rocks simply are, ancient and indifferent. The water is simply there, warm and clear. The people move through their days with the ease of those who have lived with the sea their whole lives. After a few days, the pace of the rest of the world begins to seem like a kind of illness you have recovered from. You find yourself wanting to stay not because the islands are perfect, but because they are real—because time moves differently here, and because the ocean, in all its vastness, makes the small troubles of elsewhere seem very small indeed.
