St. Martin
A pelican dives into turquoise water off Philipsburg's harbor while sailboats tack between the French and Dutch sides. The island's dual nationality runs through its streets like a current, reshaping itself every few kilometers.
A pelican dives into turquoise water off Philipsburg's harbor while sailboats tack between the French and Dutch sides. The island's dual nationality runs through its streets like a current, reshaping itself every few kilometers.
The northern parishes around Marigot carry the weight of French administration and French appetite. The harbor there smells of diesel and croissants. Stone buildings with shutters face the water. Fishermen sell their catch from wooden tables, and the market spills across the street in crates of christophene and breadfruit. Moving south and east, the character shifts. The Dutch side around Philipsburg is flatter, more commercial, with cruise ships anchoring offshore and the streets arranged in grids. But leave the town and the land becomes scrub and salt pond, with herons standing in shallow water and the air turning mineral. The eastern parishes—Oyster Pond, Orient Bay—feel quieter, more dispersed. Houses sit on hillsides overlooking reefs. The roads narrow. Vegetation thickens. The western side, toward Cul de Sac and Cupecoy, is wilder still, with cliffs and beaches that face the Atlantic swells rather than the sheltered Caribbean.
A day here moves between water and land without ceremony. You might walk Marigot's waterfront in the morning, watching fishing boats return, then drive twenty minutes to find yourself on a beach where the sand is pale and the water shallow enough to wade far out. The towns don't announce themselves. You arrive at a place and realize you're in it—a cluster of houses, a rum shop, a church. Lunch happens when you're hungry, not when a restaurant opens. The afternoon light is severe and white. People move slowly through it. The roads climb and descend without warning. From certain points on the island's spine, you can see both coasts at once—the calm Caribbean side and the rougher Atlantic edge. The vegetation is low and adapted to salt and wind: acacia, tamarind, century plants with thick leaves. The air tastes of salt and carries the sound of waves from whichever side you're nearest.
The island stays with you because it doesn't perform. It is two countries sharing one landscape, and that duality means nothing is finished or final. You can spend days moving between languages, currencies, and ways of organizing space, but the island itself remains unchanged by these borders. The beaches curve the same way on both sides. The reefs lie in the same water. The wish to stay comes not from escape but from the texture of ordinary life here—the particular light, the particular arrangement of hills and coast, the way a place can be divided and still feel whole.
