Netherlands
A man on a bicycle carries a child in a seat above the front wheel, a loaf of bread in one basket, flowers in another, and pedals through Amsterdam as if this ordinary arrangement of life were the only sensible way to move through a city.

The Netherlands shifts character as you travel north and east from the coast. In the west, Amsterdam and Rotterdam sit in a landscape of water so thoroughly managed that you forget it was once a problem. The canals here are architecture, not accident. South of Rotterdam, the land flattens toward Belgium, and the towns—Delft, Gouda, Leiden—have the particular calm of places where nothing needs to rush. Move inland toward Utrecht and the terrain becomes less a grid of water and more a patchwork of farms, forests, and small lakes where people actually swim rather than navigate. The north, around Groningen and Friesland, opens into something wilder: low horizons, wind farms, villages built on terpen—artificial mounds raised above the flood line centuries ago. Each region has kept its own rhythm. Amsterdam moves fast. Friesland moves at the pace of cows and bicycles.
A day in the cities begins early. The Dutch are awake before their coffee, already on their bikes, already moving. In Amsterdam, the canals fill with the sound of bicycle bells and the smell of fresh stroopwafels from corner shops. The museums—the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh—are serious places where people stand in front of paintings in silence. By afternoon, the cafés fill with people drinking beer or coffee, sitting outside even when it is cold, because sitting outside is the point. In smaller cities like Haarlem or Delft, the pace is gentler. The market squares are genuinely where people buy food, not where tourists buy postcards. Outside the cities, the land is quiet in a way that feels deliberate. Bicycle paths run through farmland where cows stand in fields that seem impossibly green. In spring, the tulip fields around Lisse are not a spectacle but a fact of the landscape—rows of color that exist because this is where tulips grow, not because anyone decided to make them beautiful.
The coast, along the North Sea, is a different country altogether. The beach towns of Zandvoort and Scheveningen have a brisk, no-nonsense character. The dunes are protected, walked carefully, treated as something precious. Farther north, the Wadden Islands—Texel, Vlieland, Terschelling—are reached by ferry and feel genuinely removed, though they are never far away. The water here is cold and gray and serious. People come to walk, to breathe, to remember that the sea is not a backdrop but a presence. There is a wish to stay that comes not from the promise of escape but from the recognition that this is a country where ordinary life has been arranged with such care that it has become extraordinary. You stay because the bicycle works, because the light at five in the afternoon in November is worth seeing, because a simple meal tastes better when you have cycled to get it.
