Guadeloupe
A woman in Fort-de-France carries a basket of christophines on her head, walking past colonial shutters painted the colour of rust and lime. The air smells of cinnamon and salt.

Guadeloupe is two islands joined by mangrove, and they feel like different countries. Basse-Terre, on the west, rises into mountains where the land grows thick and wet. The interior holds the Parc National, where trails climb through fern forest and the canopy closes overhead so completely that noon becomes dusk. The peaks of Soufrière dominate the skyline—a volcano that still breathes steam from its crater, and the earth around it smells of sulphur and minerals. The towns here are smaller, older, built into the slopes. Deshaies on the northern coast sits in a curve of black sand beach, and the fishing boats there are painted in the colours of the Caribbean—blue, yellow, red—the same hues that appear in the houses behind them.
Grande-Terre, to the east, is flatter and drier, the land opening into sugarcane fields and limestone plateaus. Pointe-à-Pitre, the main city, sprawls across the coast with a chaos that feels lived-in rather than designed. The market there—Marché Saint-Antoine—moves with the rhythm of the morning, vendors calling out prices for breadfruit and dasheen, for salted cod and fresh coconut. The streets narrow between colonial arcades and modern shopfronts. The beaches on Grande-Terre's southern edge are different from Basse-Terre's: they are pale, protected, the water shallow and clear enough to see the sand beneath your feet. The Saintes, a small archipelago offshore, can be reached by boat, and the islands there have their own character—quieter, more isolated, with fishing villages where the houses are painted in pastels and the streets follow the contours of the land.
A day moves slowly here. You might wake in a town where the bakeries open before six, where bread comes warm and the coffee is strong and served in small cups. You walk through streets where the heat builds steadily, where people sit in doorways and on benches, talking in Creole and French. By midday, the rhythm slows further—shops close, people retreat indoors or to the shade. The afternoon brings a shift: the light changes, the air moves differently, and the beaches and the water become the focus again. The food anchors everything—accras, blaff, colombo, boudin—dishes that taste of the islands' history, made from what grows here and what the sea provides. In the evening, the towns come alive again. Music drifts from bars and restaurants. People gather in squares. The temperature drops just enough to make being outside feel like a choice rather than an endurance.
The coast wraps around both islands, and it is part of the rhythm of living here, not separate from it. The water is warm and changes colour depending on where you are—turquoise in the shallows, deeper blue beyond the reefs. You find yourself wanting to stay longer than you planned, not because everything is easy, but because the pace of the place begins to feel like the right one.
