Grenada
A nutmeg tree grows in Grenada's volcanic soil, its fruit split open to show the scarlet mace inside. The island smells of clove and cinnamon where the wind moves through the spice estates.

Grenada's geography divides itself into distinct moods. The southern parishes around St. George's hold the island's density—the capital sits on a horseshoe harbour where colonial buildings climb the hillside in pastel layers, and the streets narrow into markets that smell of fresh fish and ground spices. Moving north toward Gouyave, the landscape opens into agricultural land where nutmeg and cocoa plantations cover the slopes, and the towns become quieter, their rhythm slower. The eastern parishes around Grenville face the Atlantic directly, and the character shifts again—the coast here is rougher, the villages more dispersed, the air carrying salt and the sound of heavier waves. The interior, where the mountains rise toward Mount St. Catherine, becomes a different country altogether: dense forest, streams cutting through valleys, the air cooler and the light filtered green through the canopy.
A day in St. George's begins early. The market at the waterfront opens before dawn, vendors arranging pyramids of nutmeg, cinnamon sticks, and cloves on wooden tables. The air fills with voices and the smell of cardamom. By mid-morning, the heat settles over the town and people retreat into the shade of shop arcades and under the eaves of colonial buildings. The harbour water turns a deeper blue. In the afternoon, if you walk inland from the coast toward the Carenage, the streets become quieter, and you notice the texture of the place—the wooden shutters, the iron railings, the way light falls through narrow passages between buildings. Outside the capital, a day moves differently. In the spice parishes, mornings are spent walking through estates where nutmeg trees create a canopy so thick that noon feels like dusk. The smell is constant and changes with the breeze—sometimes sweet, sometimes sharp. In the villages, the day revolves around the rhythm of cooking, fishing, and the arrival of boats at the shore. The land itself shapes time here more than clocks do.
The wish to stay in Grenada grows from small moments. It comes from sitting on a beach where the sand is dark volcanic black and the water is warm enough to enter without hesitation. It comes from conversations with people who have lived here for generations and know the names of every inlet and headland. It comes from the taste of fresh fish seasoned with the spices that grow in the soil beneath your feet, and from the understanding that this island is not a collection of destinations but a place where the mountains, the sea, the towns, and the people who live here form a single, continuous landscape. The coast curves around the island in a line that feels both protective and open, and the longer you stay, the more the geography becomes familiar—not as a map, but as a place you can walk through and know.
