Epirus

A three-arched stone bridge crosses a river running green over pale pebbles, with the Pindus mountains climbing into cloud behind it. Epirus, in the north-west of mainland Greece, is where rock, water and sea meet at close quarters.

Epirus

Travel east and the land tightens into ridges. The Zagori villages sit on mountain shoulders, their roofs made of grey slate, linked by paved paths and humped stone bridges over gorges that cut deep into the rock. Further south, Ioannina keeps its lakeshore, a town of low houses and narrow old lanes around water that often lies under mist at dawn. Westward the mood loosens. Olive terraces run down toward the Ionian, and the coast turns from cliff to lagoon near Preveza, where salt pans and wading birds make the air feel flatter and wider. Each part has its own temper: severe in the mountains, domestic around the lake, open toward the sea.

A day here might begin in Ioannina, with coffee in the old quarter and a walk along the lake to the small wooded island where a monastery and a few stone cells sit under plane trees. By midday you could be on a mountain road above the Vikos gorge, looking down at limestone walls with the river a thread at the bottom. Afternoons in Metsovo mean wood-smoked cheese bought from a shop counter and wind coming off the pass. Then the road drops to the coast. At Parga, white houses climb the hill above a bay of clear green water, and at Syvota small boats knock gently against the rocks while tavernas grill fish and dress it with lemon and oil. The sea is cold in the morning and warm by the middle of the day, and the light on the water changes every hour.

What stays with you is the sequence: the cold river, the slate roofs, the lake fog, then salt on the skin. Epirus does not hurry to show itself, and people who leave often find they have been planning the return before they reach the main road. The wish is a simple one: to stay another night, to walk one more path above the gorge, to watch the coast change colour from a terrace with olive trees behind it and the mountains still visible over the shoulder of the land.
